Castello Monaci Pilùna ’16

As we approach summer, we look toward warmer wine producing regions for a red that won’t weigh us down. DNA testing has shown that the Primitivo grape, cultivated in Southern Italy and Sicily, is the same as Zinfandel; however, in the adept hands of the Italians, they produce a soft, round, balanced red with little of the jammy or high alcohol qualities found in most California Zins, and very low tannin. | Notes on tannins

Pop a bottle of the Castello Monaci and you’ll find a medium-bodied wine with notes of dark fruits and dried cherries. The higher acidity of Primitivo pairs well with tomato sauced dishes, hard Italian cheeses, and all those lovely vegetables you’d find in the south of Italy, such as eggplant, olives and capers, peppers and wild mushrooms. It’s an excellent, and economical, choice for a summer red.

Pleasant companion for: pizza, grilled meats, hard Italian cheeses, Italian sausages and hearty summer veggies.
