Let’s face it. Thanksgiving is not really about the wine- nor are the December holidays that follow. They are celebrations of family, friends and food (all of which call for a healthy pour). A wine selection should fit seamlessly into the festivity. It should be beloved and delicious- and importantly, it should be reliable. While that’s not a sexy attribute, it is something everyone values. The Chalk Hill Chardonnay is a solid, reliable bottle. Every time I pop open the cork and take that first sip, I am awash in feelings of gratitude that it is exactly what I want from a Chard. That may not be fancy somm speak, but it’s the truth.
Now for the “fancy” wine words, which will help explain why this is a great pick for your holiday gatherings. While the wine is aged in oak and is a full-bodied, buttery Chardonnay, it also has a minerality and acidity that keeps it balanced and from becoming too rich. Aromas of apple, citrus, hazelnut and vanilla waft up from the glass, leading to butterscotch on the palate and a smooth, even finish. This wine will carry you through from appetizers to turkey and stuffing, creamy potatoes and cranberry sauce.
Pleasant companion for: Rich, creamy and soft cheeses, roasted root vegetables, fresh salads, roasted poultry, lobster, crab, salmon, halibut, creamy pasta dishes, potatoes.
