As the story goes, renowned winemaker Chuck Wagner was inspired by his dad, who used to sit at the dinner table and pour different wines into his glass until he got the flavor he was after. Taking this impromptu blending to the next level, the winemaker set out to carefully combine different grapes to craft a unique style of wine, which set a standard for California blends.
Conundrum definitely comes in at a higher price point, but it’s consistency and deliciousness makes it a savvy buy, especially for special occasions. It is an excellent food pairing wine, but also incredibly drinkable all on its own. Medium bodied, yet complex and structured, it delights from the first touch on the tongue to the ultra smooth finish. Vanilla and spice aromas lead to plum, cherry, and dark chocolate flavors on the palate. I can’t think of a better red to pair with richly flavored holiday food, but it’s versatility translates to Asian, Indian, Mexican, and barbecue to boot.
Pleasant companion for: Hearty stews, roasted meat, smoky and fired flavors, slow cooked tomato sauces, earthy roasted root vegetables, cured meats and robust cheese.
