Driving along the Danube river on a stunning summer day, we were struck by the beauty of the countryside and the rolling hillside vineyards. We had already been in Austria for a few days and had been thoroughly enjoying the local Rieslings and Grüner Veltliners, but coming here to the heart of wine country took our breath away.
Returning to Utah, where lazy lunches of smoked lake trout matched perfectly with a bottle of Austrian wine are a thing of the past, was a tough pill to swallow. Thankfully we still have access to some really great bottles here which seem to be made for warm days and bumper crops. The Laurenz V. Grüner Veltliner should be on your short list. Peach and citrus are complimented by a peppery note in this medium bodied white. Lively and fresh with good acidity, the Laurenz V. is a super food friendly wine. In fact, we recommend drinking it with food. While pleasant enough on it’s first pour, it improved after breathing for a half hour or so and with our meal (which happened to be grilled pizza topped with fresh figs, goat cheese and prosciutto). Mmmm mmm.
Pleasant companion for: All things summer! Fresh vegetables and salads, young cheeses, light meats, seafood.
Try with our Apricot Toasts with Pickled Red Onions.
