Who doesn’t love a wine that tastes like a million bucks, but doesn’t cost an arm and a leg? The Monte Antico red blend from Tuscany is elegant, superbly drinkable and wonderful for food pairings, especially Italian fare. This medium-bodied wine perfectly melds the new world style of ripe, juicy fruit, with that old world Italian earthiness found in Sangiovese. The tannins are present, yet well balanced, providing good structure that leads into a smooth finish. Think elegant meets rustic – or, put another way, the country of Italy encapsulated in a wine bottle.
While perfectly lovely to drink all on its own, Italians drink their wine with food. Steer clear of seafood or light summertime dishes, however, lighter vegetables are not out of the question if they have enough depth of flavor. A warming vegetable stew or my zucchini crostata are great vegetarian options, or a big plate of spaghetti and red sauce so the tomatoes bring out even more fruit in the wine.
Pleasant companion for: Mushrooms, roasted vegetables, risotto, pizza or pasta, tomato sauces, charcuterie, Italian cheese, poultry, red meat, hearty stews.
Try with our Zucchini Crostata.
