Someone paid attention here, and that someone is Matt Brady. He’s the winemaker at Samsara in the Santa Rita Hills, which produces a beautiful Pinot Noir. Their philosophy is low-intervention, or what they call “minimal interference” and “maximum patience.” This, however, is a far cry from ignoring the grapes. Meticulous attention is paid to handcraft the wine, without manipulating the natural process. The result is a structured, complex Pinot full of character and nuance.
First impressions tend toward pomegranate and dark cherry. The sweet, concentrated fruit gives way to soft tannins and a smooth finish. Smoke and pepper provide interest, almost something to chew on, while its acidity, minerality, and alcohol content allow it to remain a food-friendly wine.
Pleasant companion for: Roasted root vegetables and winter squash, earthy mushrooms, wild rice, farro and quinoa, salmon and tuna, turkey, chicken, duck, pork, and other dark meats, cherries, figs, mild cheeses and charcuterie.
