It’s a steal. A wine of this caliber, from Napa, is a must-buy. This red blend, made in the style of a Cotes du Rhone, hails from Jeff Cohn cellars, a family owned and operated winery in Napa. The 2014 Smoke and Mirrors is not only infinitely quaffable, it’s a lovely match to a variety of foods thanks to its vibrant acidity and fruitiness. A spicy, smoky aroma invites you into the glass as you ponder the deep, rich mahogany color. At first sip you pick up blackberries and balsamic, and realize the fruit and acidity is so vibrant, but not out of control thanks to the structure provided by the incredibly soft tannins. A hint of chocolate presents, leading into the long, smooth finish. Then you realize… you want another sip. And another. Try to eat something with it though – contrary to popular belief, red wine is not it’s own food group.
Pleasant companion for: Comfort food, such as warm, bubbly vegetable casseroles, bean stews, lasagna, tomato sauces, rich pastas, stewed or gilled meat, hard cheeses, spicy or ethnic foods such as Indian, Thai curries, or spicy noodle dishes.
Try with our Spaghetti with Apple-Tomato Sauce.
